Horizon Green
Environmental stewardship is a fundamental tenet at Horizon Lines. Since man first set sail on a ship laden with cargo, our economic prosperity has been intertwined with the efficient transport of goods. We recognize that protecting the environment so future generations can enjoy that prosperity has become an essential ingredient in sustainable world trade. The Horizon Green Initiative seeks to better understand and measure transportation’s impact on the environment, and to develop programs that incorporate environmental thinking and mitigation into our core operations.
We are committed to making a difference in the following areas:
Marine Environment
To protect the marine environment, Horizon Lines has established several programs in addition to the MARPOL and ISM codes created by the International Maritime Organization. These include vessel management controls, low sulfur diesel fuel usage and marine terminal pollution mitigation plans.
Emissions
Horizon Lines is focused on reducing transportation emissions, including carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide, through improvements in vessel fuel consumption and truck efficiency; the use of alternative fuels; and the development of more fuel-efficient transportation solutions.
Sustainability
Horizon Lines believes in a long-term sustainable approach to logistics management that benefits the company, customers, associates, shareholders and the community. Examples include reducing empty backhaul miles through logistics network optimization and using recycled materials to build containers.
Recognition
Outstanding achievements in environmental excellence have earned Horizon Lines numerous awards by the Chamber of Shipping of America. In 2011, Horizon Lines was named a Top 75 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics magazine and Top 50 Green Supply Chain Partner last year for the company’s environment initiatives, which include reducing fossil fuel consumption and emissions, as well as recycling efforts. In 2012, Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine presented the company with a Green Supply Chain Award, which honors companies that are making sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategies.

2011 Highlights:
Management
Horizon Lines appointed Andrew Phillips as Environmental Compliance Director in November 2011. Mr. Phillips is responsible for leading the company’s overall environmental compliance efforts moving forward, with particular focus on the carrier’s marine operations. Mr. Phillips joined Horizon Lines with an extensive maritime career, including 15 years ashore in environmental and safety compliance and 20 years at sea, five of those serving as Ship Master.
